Dolcetto was designed for a recent mYak knitting retreat in the Langhe region of Italy that I had the pleasure to be a part of. With that in mind, I designed it to dovetail into the two workshops I taught - one on necklines, and one on pattern modification.

The second pattern I designed for my recent mYak retreat to the Langhe region of Italy is the Barbera Scarf, and since it needed to tie into my workshops, it’s designed to be modified easily for size.

I’m having a moment with stripes that are not your average stripes, and the fantastic texture and curves in these lines caught my eye immediately. They are layered and varied in a way that adds a unique feel to this simple sweater and they were a breeze to work!

Poet’s Dream is a lofty, delicate pullover with an elegant vibe. The simple woven motif shows up beautifully in this subtly variegated fiber, and the bit of lace that finishes off the design adds a lovely finishing touch to the panel. Gorgeous texture and unexpected color are the stars in this lace and cable pullover, worked in Wensley Worsted from La Bien Aimee. I keep calling it a “confection of a sweater,” as the detail in pale green reminds me of summer taffy or watermelon candy.

Lemon & Paeroa is named for a popular New Zealand drink as a nod to the beautiful Arapawa yarn I used. Helene of Happy Go Knitty makes gorgeous blends using local fibers from NZ. Her colors are subdued and sophisticated, and the gentle heathers and natural tweeds hidden in the strands really highlight my stitches!

The Smoked Orange Cardigan is all about deep texture and vibrant color. I really enjoyed the contrast between the two elements in this combination and I just love how striking this simple cardigan is. Pendennis Club was designed to showcase Jill Draper’s Kingston Yarn. I really loved the look when I combined two of these stunning tweeds with a pop of Rockwell for a litlte marled accent. Once I finished the Bijou Tee, I also wanted a heavier weight version for winter, and lucky for me the Wisconsin Woolen Spun comes in Worsted Weight as well as Fingering. Long sleeves and a tweak to the fit (less ease, a bit more length) means this one will work beautifully with my winter wardrobe.

I always want small, portable knits for summer knitting. Easily memorizable and totally addicting, this hat is just the thing to knit while sitting in the sun with a cold drink by your side. Plus, the distinct lines in the motif make it easy to see where you are if you stop and start again.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
I love a cozy, lofty shawl. Something big and soft and airy than can be tossed on or off as temperature dictates.

I fell in love with these cables while designing my Tom and Jerry Hats in YOTH’s Big Sister, and I just wasn’t ready to let them go. They are fun to work and have a unique, delicate shape that I just love. So Talisker was an excuse to work them once more - this time in Father for some quick, squishy, satisfying Rambouillet knitting.
Knitting: Cardigan
I always seem to come back to the basic idea of the Grandpa Cardigan – each time working it from a somewhat different perspective.

Knitting: Cowl
This is a great, big, cushy cowl for tucking your face into on a cold day. I wanted a bold, simple texture, so slipped stitches garter is accented by slipped stitches on both front and back, making for a perfectly reversible piece.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
The subtle shades of gray and apricot in this skein drew me in from the beginning, and the lovely, sheepy quality of the Romney fiber is just perfect for rustic, warm mitts. These are going to LAST. (which makes me really happy because I really love them…)
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Gorgeous yarn and an addictive cable. You really can’t go wrong. And this YOTH Big Sister is soft and warm and just loves to show off the distinct lines of this interesting cable motif. The pattern was so fun to knit that I had to make two hats instead of just one.
Knitting: Pullover
Sazerac adds a little drama to the classic cabled pullover. A beautifully intricate motif is the focus of the design, and it really stands out when worked in this pale blue from YOTH’s gorgeous palette of colors. Their Big Sister yarn is soft and round and addictive. Plus it really loves a good cable.
Knitting: Cardigan
This sweater is a classic cardigan with interesting lines at the shoulder and a beautifully delicate cable pattern on the body.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
As soon as I put my skein of YOTH’s new Father on the needles, I knew it had to be cables.
Knitting: Pullover
I set out to design a wardrobe basic with this one. Gin and Tonic should work with everything, kind of like the drink itself, which I find appropriate for any occasion!
Knitting: Cowl
Breathless DK is one of my favorite go-to yarns, so when Kristi mentioned that had a bulky version of it in the works, I was already sold. It’s just as soft and lightweight as the DK, but big and round and oh-so cozy, so a cowl had to be knit.
Knitting: Vest
Stillhouse is a cozy vest with a distinct cable, knit in Brooklyn Tweed’s gorgeous new chunky tweed, Quarry.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
After knitting Beekman Tavern, I still wanted to do more with Foxhill Farm’s gorgeous Cormo yarn. This design is named Daisy because I think that’s the perfect sheep name - and because I’m pretty sure Alice, who runs Foxhill and knows everybody in the flock - has told me about a sheep named Daisy before.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
After knitting Beekman Tavern, I still wanted to do more with Foxhill Farm’s gorgeous Cormo yarn. The design is named for Buck - the sheep that Alice (who runs the farm and is the heart and soul of the operation) has told me gives his fleece to make this perfect gray shade.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
I just couldn’t let my partial skeins of Rockwell go unloved once I’d finished with my Dobbs Ferry Sweater.
Knitting: Pullover
When Jill showed me this yarn at Rhinebeck last year, I had instant visions of an Icelandic yoke. A simple, bold motif shows off the tones and texture of Rockwell beautifully, and the classic style gives a nod to the history and tradition that speaks to me in all of Jill’s sheep to skein yarns.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Bywater features delicate lines that showcase the various shades of blue in this beautiful Nice and Knit DK yarn. A deep ribbing and a slipped stitch edge create a cool transition from brim to cables, and these cables are fun to work. There’s something addictive about seeing where the next cross is going to take you.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
When Melissa of Sweet Fiber sent me an unexpected box FULL of gorgeous yarns, this cashmere DK begged to be knit up first. The subtle shades of her color and the feel of her cashmere are to die for. And I’ve always wanted a giant scarf that’s super soft, extra wide, and boldly lacy.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
I’m in love with every one of Bare Naked Wool’s neutral colors and gorgeous wools. And pairing these lovely, soft grays with just a scrap of brightly colored leftover yarn (my scrap is from a Julie Asselin skein) made for a fun project.
Knitting: Cardigan
Mezcal is my sweater for when Summer turns to Fall this year - with an easy fit, a bit of lace, and a classic shape that will go with anything from shorts to jeans to a dress. The pattern itself is a soothing knit for travel or beach, and seamless construction means finishing just a few edges is easy.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
My latest foray into shawl design is assymetric, and I’m hooked!
Knitting: Cowl
The Brighton Cowl is the third pattern for my London Calling KAL and trip to the UK! After knitting up the London Mitts, I needed just one more fix of Uncommon Thread….
Knitting: Cardigan
Dubonnet is an easy cardigan with a vintage feel, casual enough for jeans and a tee shirt, but also special enough to wear with a lovely sundress. It features 3/4 sleeves, a touch of lace and a hip length, plus delicate lipstick pockets that add pop of color while accenting the flattering, wearable silhouette. Lace breaks up the body and is cen...
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Simple cozy mitts with a cuff are something I can always use. And once warm weather rolls around, I love working on accessories accessory since they’re portable, easy to work on, and light on my lap!
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
I love the lines and texture in this motif, which reminds me of a 70s crochet pattern. The lace is actually quite simple to create, and when worked in Jill Draper’s hand dyed fibers, the little “shells” really showcase the subtle variations in her gorgeous yarn.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Give me some round, cushy merino and a few cables and I’m all set. This motif features elegant curves and a mix of texture that’s really fun to work.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Windward Island plays with texture by mixing a smooth cable with with eyelets and staggered decreases to create undulating lines.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Singapore Sling features a deep, detailed lace motif that absolutely sings in a soft, round worsted weight yarn.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This was the skein that started the whole Tiki Collection.
Knitting: Cowl
I wanted something big and squooshy and textured for this design. A slipped stitch motif gives the fabric an extra lofty feel, while adding texture and depth to the background for the cables, which are placed off center on the long wrap.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
This gorgeous acid green had to be part of the Tiki Collection. This was my first time knitting with Julie’s Leizu DK, which is really gorgeous stuff, with some great stitch definition.

Ommegang is my take on the assymetric cabled tunic that’s been floating around Pinterest.

Zacapa is a classic pullover, designed to showcase a bold textured rib motif, which is repeated on both body and sleeves. The use of the texture around the upper body accentuates the shoulders and works beautifully with the lines of the saddle shaping at the yoke. Smaller “seams” up each side break up a long run of stockinette, giving the body ...

A light and breezy summer pullover, knitted with alpaca-blend cotton yarn. Waist- shaping and the details on the sides create a feminine line. Knit one for a holiday on the beach.

A collection of sorts -- with Bristol Ivy, Alicia Plummer and Melissa Schaschwary. Four friends and four hats, all with poms!
Knitting: Cowl
I loved this yarn the moment I saw it online! Reminiscent of the English countryside from whence it came, the Langdale Aran is both delicate and hearty at the same time. Soft as can be - with a lovely roundness and spring to the fabric, it’s just perfect in a cowl.
Knitting: Cardigan
I loved making this one. The lines of these cables are rhythmic and bold, and the idea here was all about emphasizing that. They are classic, but not exactly. And the geometry inside them is just asymmetric enough to keep them interesting.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Pisco Punch is the latest of my patterns to get a little upgrade, and this time I switched up the suggested yarn as well, having seen Verb’s Gather and realizing how beautiful this would be in the more delicate fiber.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
One Bourbon is a deeply cabled beanie with a cozy folded brim. Bold lines show up beautifully in a subtly hand dyed yarn and give the hat a strong manly texture. Crown shaping creates a beautiful design at top.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
One Scotch is my version of the basic ribbed cap. I had a little fun with two different rib patterns, but otherwise it’s about a simple cap in a gorgeous yarn.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
One Beer is a simple textured hat, knit in a squishy, tweedy yarn. The garter rib motif is simple and satisfying and shows up well against a tweed or a heathered yarn beautifully.
Knitting: Cardigan
Dirty Martini is a modern take on the lace cardigan - delicate, but not too girly. It began as my nod to the classic Chanel jacket but changed a little along the way. Cozy borders in a darker color add weight to the lighter, open body of the sweater and accentuate the difference between lace and ribbing -- and a Peter Pan collar gets a makeover...

Amaro is a simple pullover that could be worn all year, but I was thinking late summer when I knit this. Pretty much exactly as Melissa wore it on Cape Cod - after a day of swimming, with a bright tank and shorts for when when the sun goes down and the wind blows across the sand.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
As summer gets underway, there are days when the last thing I want on my lap is an entire sweater. But a hat? That’s just perfect for late summer knitting.
Knitting: Cardigan
I wanted an easy cardigan with a classic look. The details on Shaken or Stirred are simple and delicate, and the sweater has a lovely feminine feel. The colorwork is very simple, but enough to be distinct, and the narrow shawl collar is kinda fun - it’s worked in garter rib, with a distinct garter stitch border that shows off the contrast betwe...

On those days when it looks like spring but still feels like winter, Paloma is warm and cozy, but delicate and feminine and perfect for warm-ing up weather. I’ve been dying for a deep, slouchy cardigan I can throw over a spring dress or delicate top and this is it.
Knitting: Pullover
Ibisco is a bit dressier than my usual designs, but this yarn called for something a little special. The soft hand, the smallest hint of sheen and the subtle haze needed to be played with.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
When Courtney (of Seed Stitch Yarns in Salem, MA) asked if I’d design something for the 2014 North Shore Yarn Crawl, we thought a shawl would be the perfect project for a mid March weekend in New England.

Mango Smoothie was a request from my daughter, Maya. She wanted something big and slouchy and easy to wear. We loved this allover texture motif, accented by a few bold cables to create flattering lines. It looks great in the yarn - which knits up distinctly, but with a slight halo from the single ply alpaca mix.
Knitting: Cowl
The Bastille Cowl is a balance of a beautiful, delicate motif and a bold, deep badass color. (Really, this is one amazing green - shades of deep gray add sophistication, and it almost glows…) Representing the balance of sensitive and cool in any lead singer -- right? I thought that this combo was pretty perfect for a project that’s a nod to a r...

NOTE: This is an old pattern of mine that is in the process of being updated. You will still get a lovely sweater if you follow the instructions available here, but please note that my style and the amount of detail I included in patterns in 2013 is NOT the same as I use now. The new version is slated to be published in 2024-2025, winter.

September Morn is my favorite kind of knit. A classic sweater with a few surprises that makes a great wardrobe staple. Ribs and texture give the sweater a little personality, but the shape is simple and flattering and works with almost any outfit. The combination of stockinettte with a few details makes for a fun knit - soothing and easy to wor...
Knitting: Cowl
I really wanted a big, cozy, textured cowl this Winter. I wanted to knit it in a motif that was simple and bold, like garter. And I wanted it in a soft, decadent yarn that would feel great wrapped around my neck.

Like the gin, this sweater is appropriate for any occasion. Tanqueray is a classic pullover, featuring a deep V with an intricate ribbing that continues around the shoulders and is seamed together at the back of the neck.

Margarita is an easy, toss-on cardigan for summer. Cape Cod is a slouchy and simple pullover for après beach. Lots of stockinette, a bit of lace, and distinct edgings make for a fun and versatile knit. Sambuca is a way to ease into a bit of colorwork. I wanted the fun of fairisle without a tangle of ends or fear of steeking. With that in mind, Sambuca features a motif that combines only 2 colors at a time, and a great deal of basic stockinette. It’s the perfect way to get your feet wet in the world of stranded knitting.

After spending some time in the Plucky Booth at VK live, I HAD to pair a few gorgeous skeins together for colorwork - really I did - and I thought mitts would be a great quick project.

Nebbiolo is a cozy, bulky cowl that can be worn either long or short, wrapped around the neck. The word “nebbia” is from the Italian for fog, and this would be just perfect on a cold and foggy day to add a little warmth and brightness to your mood!
Knitting: Cardigan
Moonshine is a versatile, feminine cardigan featuring a simple lace repeat which appears fluid when worked in a large panel. These waves of lace are subtly echoed in a slip stitch border along the front edges (which might be my favorite detail of the whole design). Worked in a delicate sport weight wool from Imperial Stock Ranch, this cardigan ...
Knitting: Cowl
My favorite kind of accessory - one skein, and addictive repeat, and minimal finishing. It’s portable, easier than it looks, and super satisfying.
Knitting: Cardigan
Bloody Mary began with the idea of a deep red, kinda long, cozy, tweedy sweater. I wanted to play with the 1960s silhouette of a low belted dress and combine it with cables to create a flattering structural element. The combination proved to be simple but bold, and very flattering.

Champagne is an elegant top that will take you from late summer right into fall. Charleston Tea is a delicate hooded cardigan, meant to be a little dressier than the usual fleece or sweatshirt you may reach for on a windy spring day. Charleston Tea features a lace and cable panel at back that’s then used for detail along the front and hood. The motif is both charted and explained with written instructions.

Vodka Lemonade is a springy sweater with a vintage vibe. Seed stitch and lace details add texture and a feminine touch, and the classic styling ensures that it will go with jeans and a tank just as easily as a sundress and sandals.
Knitting: Pullover
Chambord, first published in 2012 and just updated in 2023, is a top down pullover with a bold cable. It also features deep ribbings at both cuffs and hem, and a modern take on the cowl neck that’s just a tiny bit different than usual.

This is my take on the dolman sleeved sweaters I’m seeing in the stores this season. I wanted one with a tad more of a body hugging shape, and a little less of a batwing.

Knitting: Poncho
A great little capelet to knit when you have just a bit less than a sweater’s worth of yarn on hand. I wanted to create something that felt classic, but depending on color and styling could be a great statement piece!
Knitting: Cardigan
Cassis is a cozy cardigan that’s easy to customize as you like. The reversible collar can be folded back or draped inward and looks great either way. The casual shape can be pinned closed or worn open, and the length is easy to adjust. Simple lace on the front and back makes a flattering line and adds a little interest.
Knitting: Cardigan
Collins is an attention-getting twist on the classic aran cabled cardigan. An asymmetric shawl collar and an elegant tie add an elegant spin to the cabled cardigan. It’s still classic enough to be wearable with jeans and boots or a great fall skirt, but it’s just a little different.
Knitting: Cardigan
This design is an updated version of the shawl collared cardigan from the 1940s or 50s that I remember worn by my favorite grandpa. I played with a more modern take on the classic. New and interesting cables, a fit that skims your curves and ends where your jeans start, and a gorgeous variegated yarn add a little twist to the original.
Knitting: Pullover
First published in 2009 as a long tunic with a cowl neck, the White Russian pattern has been updated and re-released in 2021 as a classic pullover, worked in either a cropped or hip length.
