My assignment for my Mason Dixon Field Guide this winter was to come up with patterns that could be knit over and over again -- like potato chips -- and one of those patterns was a bulky Slipped Stitch Cap, knit in Neighborhood Fiber Company’s Studio Chunky.

Apparently I was successful, because I knit two, and still wanted to play with both slipped stitches and NFC yarn again in one of the same color combos I’d already used in the guide!! (these colors are Cross St Market and Bolton Hill, for anyone wondering)

Maraschino Cherry is a little more delicate, but just as addictive. And I love how different these textured little rectangles look, depending on the angle at which you see them from.

I’ve added some detail along the brim and worked shaping that allows the pattern to continue deep into the crown on this design. Colorwork is achieved by slipping stitches, and you only need to work with one color on each round.

It’s a great way to use up leftovers, a fantastic excuse to pair colors, and it’s a quick, satisfying little hat to just whip up!

The design is easily modified for depth or width, and notes are included in the pattern on how to do so. As you can see from my test knitters’ projects, it looks great both fitted or with a little slouch, so feel free to adjust as desired. Gauge and yardage might vary a little with substitute yarns, so be sure to keep track.

Based on the test knits, you should get a second hat out 2 skeins of NFC DK if you reverse colors on the second hat, in the 3 smallest sizes. You’ll be cutting it close on the largest size.
