A sweater for my husband this time. Something simple and bold in a gorgeous wear-everywhere tweed. And named for one of his favorite drinks.

Old Fashioned features simple bold details. It’s an easy fitting, drop shouldered pullover with lots of ribbing and thick, head-turning cables. Knit in a deep brown with flecks of bright blue, deep gold and rust, it’s a wardrobe staple that matches almost everything Craig owns, and he’s already taken to grabbing it and tossing it over a flannel or a tee shirt before he walks out the door during our cold Boston Spring.

This was a gift for Craig, and I chose a tweed I knew he would love, BUT -- depending on the fiber and color used, Old Fashioned could be knit for anyone in your life! Made in a soft yarn with a halo or a light pastel, I see it as a lovely feminine pullover. Worked in bright color, it could be a modern statement sweater, and in a crisp merino, depending on the color chosen, I see it as a sweater for anyone. Plus, worked in a farm yarn, it would have that rustic, classic vibe we all know and love.

I’ve made and photographed a few sample swatches to illustrate this. Shown are YOTH Father in Peach, Barrett Wool Co Home Worsted in Field, and Green Mountain Spinnery Mountain Mohair in Blizzard.

Old Fashioned is knit from the bottom up in the round to armholes, then the upper front and back are separated and worked flat to shoulders. Once shoulders are seamed, sleeves and collar are picked up and worked in the round to end. This is an easy sweater to modify for both width and length and notes are in the pattern on how to do so.

Cable instructions are both written and charted.
