Baby Oban
Baby Oban started as a quick gift. My plan was to cast on and make a stockinette hat, but apparently I’m unable to do that.
Instead, I started playing with the cables from my Oban designs, creating a narrow version that would lean itself nicely into both the brim and the crown shaping on a tiny hat. After finishing the first one, I grabbed a pencil and wrote down my thoughts, and then I grabbed more yarn and knit two more hats.
I don’t even know any babies besides the one, but making baby hats is absolutely amazing, and they go so FAST. I’ve sent my extras off to Magpie Fiber’s shop in Frederick MD, but many of you do have babies you can knit for.
Given how much I enjoyed these, and what great little gifts they make, I decided to write up the pattern in a range of sizes for all of you! Enjoy!
Sizes:
10(12,14)(16,18)”
25.5(30.5,35.5)(40.75,45.75)cm circumf. laid flat, unstretched.
5.5(5.5,5.5)(6.5,6.5)”
14(14,14)(16.5,16.5)cm deep from cast-on to center of crown.
See guide by age below:
10”/25.5cm = 0-3 months, stretches to fit a 12”/30.5cm head.
12”/30.5cm = 3-6 months, stretches to fit a 14”/35.5cm head.
14”/35.5cm = 6-12 months, stretches to fit a 16”/40.75cm head.
16”/40.5cm = toddler, stretches to fit an 18”/45.75cm head.
18”/45.75cm = older child to small adult, stretches to fit a 20”/50.75cm head.
Yardage needed by Size:
75(100,125)(150,175)yds
70(95,115)(140,160)m
I suggest a round, worsted weight yarn to knit hat body.
Add 25-50yds/23-46m more yarn to add a pom, depending on size of pom desired.
Pink hat shown in Magpie Fibers Quartet Worsted, pink is Lil Bit Bougie and green/yellow is in Strange Brew. Blue hat knit in discontinued Autumn and Indigo Classic Worsted yarn from my stash. Colorway is Herb.
