I love dogs of all sizes and volunteer at a dog rescue. This hat features two small dogs. The first is the much loved Corgi (the Queen’s Dog) with short legs, big ears and a big heart. The Bonus Hat is the Shih Tzu, or the Shih Poo (Poodle / Shih Tzu mix). I always think of these small fluffy pups as Mop Dogs. Always happy and great cuddlers.

I designed a hat 15 years ago with the intention of writing up the pattern. It took me all that time to rediscover it and write it up. It is called the Snowburst Hat. It needed a companion cowl which led to a couple of different all-over patterns and border motifs. I love this one, but love them all. Holiday Gift Stockpiles are a side benefit o...

Vyshyvanka shirts are rich examples of Ukrainian embroidery. The traditional motifs and colors chosen vary by area of the country and have had a renaissance among the younger generation in Ukraine. It can tell the story of the wearer and protect the wearer from harm. It seems appropriate to adapt some of these motifs to knitting.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
While creating a trilogy of patterns to raise money for Ukraine in February of 2022, I discovered Vyshyvanka embroidery. A Ukranian tradition of embroidering shirts and other clothing articles, the motifs are amazing. I have decided to make a few more pieces using these motifs. I have adapted a star motif to form a heart.

Sashiko was introduced to me by my friend, Naeko. A form of Japanese embroidery, it’s often worked in white or light blue on Indigo fabric. Sashiko ( translation: “little stabs” ) is a method of making common clothing more decorative and reinforcing well-worn clothing to extend the life of the fabric. Centuries ago, indigo was the least expensi...

This year, Lunar New Year begins just before the Olympics in Beijing. I wanted to make a hat to celebrate Lunar New Year, so it needed to make a nod to tradition, be full of color and be simple but beautiful. I have been working on a lotus motif for years and couldn’t find just the right one. This year the design stars aligned and, while lookin...

A Neck Gaiter is useful for skiers, snowshoers, hikers, workers & walkers or anyone outside in winter cold. A Gaiter needs to be a bit tighter than a cowl as it needs to stay up snug to the skin, like a sock! As for the motif, well nothing screams winter like an alligator. I know, right??? I like to think the Gator helps a skier “tear up th...

Naeko is a Japanese language partner that I met in 2021. She is living in the U.S. while her husband is working here for a few years. We all have good hair days and bad hair days - especially us curly headed folk. On a bad hair day, a GOOD HARE DAY Hat is essential. It covers a multitude of sins. And makes you look wicked stylish. You can also just wear this hat because it is cute. Hares are slightly different by size.

This cowl is a companion cowl to the Holly Go Lightly Hat. I love a cowl with a stiff fabric that stands up instead of draping. Cranes are believed to live for a thousand years and inhabit the land of the immortals. They symbolize longevity and good fortune. This is the year of the Bear for me. The Polar Bear is a favorite, the cool colors of winter, the ice and snow. My favorite Season. This cap is inspired by a photo of Norwegian Wallpaper, strewn with forest items. It’s just a forest dream. Though not an exact copy, the floating motifs are in the same style as the paper. Each hat is a little different but all the elements are there! Trees, leaves, flowers, snow, foxes, hearts, birds and reindeer all appear in the cap.

In this case, Cobble isn’t a stone, but a mashup of cable-and-bobble. Knit in a bulky yarn, it’s a three stitch cable rather than a four stitch, as four would make it too bulky when using a heavier yarn. Tahki Arlington was used in the samples. It’s soft enough for a baby and warm enough for a winter wind. The bobbles are visible but don’t “pop...
