Wizard in a Blizzard.
An Extremely Cool Hat by Lisa McFetridge
My daughter saw a runner wearing a stocking cap one day. She thought she would like a stocking cap too, but it had to be much cooler. Like a Wizard Hat. So stars on a night sky background seemed to fit the bill. It tilts to one side or the other, but not back or forward. We had a Blizzard this weekend and since it rhymed with Wizard and that is when I knit it, well, you can guess the rest…
Knit in a light worsted weight wool (Cascade 220 or Knit Picks Wool of the Andes or Swish would all work well) in three sizes (Small Child, Child, Adult) with a very tiny rolled edge leading into corrugated ribbing. Randomly changing the colors in the stars gives a really pretty star field with lots of depth. If desired a yellow/orange/gold self-striping or variegated yarn can be substituted for CC1, CC2, and CC3. Be sure to add up the yardage for the 3 colors if doing so. The way the decreases are done force the hat to fall to either side but it won’t flop forward so it stays out of the eyes.
This is an INTERMEDIATE LEVEL pattern.
Materials:
- US size 7 24inch circular needles and same size DP’s (or size to obtain gauge)
- 1 seam needle, -1 stitch marker
- Any light worsted weight yarn (Cascade 220, Knit Picks Swish & WOA all work) 135, (150, 165) yds MC Navy in photo 30, ( 40, 45) yds CC1 Gold in photo 30, ( 40, 45) yds CC2 Medium Yellow in photo - This color used for tassel also. 25, ( 30, 35) yds CC3 Pale Yellow in photo If desired a yellow/orange/gold self-striping or variegated yarn, like SWISH TONAL can be substituted for CC1, CC2, and CC3. Add up the yardage for the 3 colors if doing so.
Gauge: 20 sts x 24 rows = 4 inches in stranded stockinette slightly stretched.
Finished Cirumference: approx 17.5, (19, 21) inches
Finished Length: approx 11, (12 ,13) inches - the length here is not critical,
if a much longer hat is desired, increase the number of rnds between decreases.
