Cool Runnings Headband
Cool RunningsHeadband
Do you like to listen to music or podcasts while running, biking or exercising outside?
Then this Headband may be for you!
This headband does dual duty, keeping ears snuggly and warm on its own, but an optional addition to the band will hold earbuds in place while out in the cold without compromising style. A wide band that tapers in the back to the join, it is knit flat in a soft, aran weight yarn and Kitchenered together, leaving no “lumpy” join. Optional crocheted chain “ladders” on the inside hold electronic earbuds in place on the head and off.
Three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large.
“Cool Runnings” was a favorite movie of my kids when they were young, about the Olympic Jamaican Bobsled team. I loved the movie too, as well as the name. It seemed to “fit” this headband when my now adult son asked me to make a headband for his girlfriend in Vermont who loves to run. Winter runs in Vermont are definitely “cool runs” and more often “cold” or “freezing” so this needed to be wide and warm. Of course, non-runners will like this headband so knit one up for them too!
MATERIALS:
- 75 (85, 95) yds Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran (MC) Colorway: Aqua
- 1 yd waste yarn in a different color from MC.
- US Size 7 / 4.5 cm needles OR size needed to obtain gauge
- Sharp Darning or Tapestry needle, * Stitch holder
- Crochet Hook Size G (optional) * 2 stitch markers (optional)
GAUGE: 24 sts = 4 in / 10 cm in WAFFLE RIB, blocked.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Circumference: app 18.5 (20.5, 21.5) in / 47 (52, 54.5) cm
Width: app 4 in / 10 cm
SIZING: Since this band is knitted flat, then grafted, the final size can be easily controlled. Three sizes are given: Small, Medium and Large, so choose the one an inch or two smaller than the intended wearer’s head. Small should fit most kids 6 and up, Medium is the “average” female adult size and Large for those of us with BIG heads, or, as I like to think, lots of brains. It can be made it even longer or shorter by adding repeats or knitting fewer repeats of the rib.
