Fossil discoveries are a remarkable testimony to the Earth’s ancient life forms and geomorphology. What is now Western Europe once possessed shallow seas and a tropical climate. How fascinating is it that the fossils we find today lived in an entirely different ecosystem? Even more astonishing: Those long-gone creatures, big or small, lived eon...

Azure waves gently roll along the shore. Nestled in the embrace of the Aegean Sea, the island of Ikaria shines like a gem. Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, winding narrow streets with whitewashed buildings, and rocky hill flanks, I wander to my heart’s content. Birds glide effortlessly through the sky, echoing the spirit of...

Paris knows a few hills, from which picturesque panoramas are offered to the onlooker. One of them, in the heart of Paris, is the Hill of Chaillot. The hill is adorned with modern art deco constructions such as the Palais de Chaillot and the Trocadéro Gardens. An eerie, deep, resonant soundscape rises, inspiring awe, otherworldliness, and grandeur. Vast expanses unfold before my eyes. Ripples. The howling of desert winds. Shifting dunes. Voices ebb and flow, epic and mystical. A minimalist melody echoes the hypnotic and infinite landscape. What magic makes music conjure images and emotions?

The tall beech trees stretch their elegant arms towards the sky, with their trunks like pillars of a Gothic cathedral, and their emerald canopy like graceful arches and vaults. The gentle breeze unravels a soothing lullaby as it weaves its way through the reeds. Rhythmically, the slender stalks sway and bow, like graceful and delicate dancers. As I wander over the wetlands, the rustling song of the grasses calms the soul and awakens the senses.

The landscape near the winding river Seine is home to hidden gems, both natural and man-made. The Castle of La Roche-Guyon stands tall and proud against the chalk cliffs along the river. Its tall buildings are partially carved out of the rockface, and a medieval tower rises up to seamlessly extend the cliff. As I climb the stairs of the tower, ...

As I hike up and down the trail along the ridges of Frahan, I meet woods, rocks and water. Here and there, through the trees, I catch a glimpse of the ever meandering river Semois. Later on my journey, a peaceful rocky outcrop offers the perfect viewpoint to admire the greenery, and enjoy the song of the gentle breeze in the leaves.

The path follows a small mountain stream winding and bubbling its way down into the valley. Alpine vegetation dots our way up. We enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of Nature. Fog envelopes the bay like a soft woolly blanket. Waves gently roll on the velvety sand. There’s a chill in the air. As I walk the mountain trail, the early signs are there: Nature prepares for its annual color show. Yes, autumn! While leaves are still green and grasses yellow after the warmth of summer, I welcome the change of season and the promise of a bright and colorful time. A majesty of red, orange, yellow, and even burgundy...

All is peaceful. The gentle breeze creates ripples on the water. The emerald waters of the small mountain lake glisten in the sun, sparkling shiny dots like stars… Dragonflies glide above the waters. We hear the murmur of the water. Just one more turn and the waterfall reveals itself in all its glory. Water pours down the rock wall in a grandiose cascade. Meander after meander, the Sûre curls its way around the tree-covered hills. We’re surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and peaceful creeks. A gentle breeze makes the grasses dance in the wind as I walk over the dune. I love those fluffy tops of the hare’s tail grass. Slender and swift birds loop high up in the air. Their high-pitched call resonates in my ears. Every summer, all summer long. Geysers are amazing forces of nature; the visible signs of incredible geothermal activity taking place deep down below our feet. Dianthuses are one of my favorite flowers. They come in a variety of rounded shapes, with one or several rows of small petals. Some are notched. Some are fringed. Indulge in memories of summer. Enjoy all the goodness that autumn brings. Warmth and sweetness. Shifting colors and fullness. To me, apricots and plums are the symbols of these passing seasons. The Abricotine scarf is named after a Danish pastry using apricots. It combines these fruits and seasons into a delightful play of colors and lines.

It’s dusk and the warmth still wraps us is its cozy blanket. All day, the sun has been glimmering on the water, creating thousands of small stars and diamonds. Now, all is quiet, as if preparing for the night ahead. We can hear the waves rolling gently. On the meandering shore, the sea meets the dark grey rocks, remnants of volcanic eruptions.

Volcanic eruptions have shaped our world. The Earth still bears the traces of these cataclysms and the remains of lava flows can still be seen to this day. One specific kind of basaltic lava, pahoehoe lava, forms smooth, billowy or ropy surfaces when cooling down.

The forest seems quiet and the only sounds are the shuffling of leaves on the ground as I walk. Water streams gently wind their way down the hillsides. Astonishing rock formations dot the landscape. Knitting is meditation in motion. Or at least, this is how I see it. More often than not. Just like meditation, knitting trains me and teaches me, in a very direct way, how to cope with the inevitable difficulties of life, big and small. Over the years, they both have given me more resilience, more patience, more balance and strength.

Geological folds are the witnesses and remnants of the awe-inspiring forces that shaped the Earth’s crust millions of years ago. Sedimentary strata got permanently bent or broken. The many types of folds are fascinating to look at: arch-shaped, dip-shaped, chevrons and bends. And think of the cataclysms that most likely created them!

Nice, fresh, home-made lemonade, does that remind you of summer? For me, it certainly does. With lemon as a starting point, I enjoy mixing other citrus fruits for more flavors and more variations. Sandymouth is a bay in Cornwall, UK where one can admire uncommon rock formations. Tilted beds of rock form vertical strata in grey and rust colors as layers of sandstone and thin shales alternate. What did it take to create these layers? What kind of force shaped the Earth’s crust to tilt these rocks? Such geological formations fascinate me.

Townhouses in The Netherlands are often narrow, long and tall - skinny houses so to speak. They stretch upwards reaching for the sky. Many townhouses built centuries ago have elaborate gables. Back then, moving to another country shook my own little world; the culture shock was real. At first, I tried to fight or escape the “annoyances” of my country of adoption. Years pass. Golden fields of crops extend as far as the eye can see. A rich warm glow fills the sky as the sun sets. Harvest time is near and promises to be plentiful. Small butterflies dance around in the fields. The barley ears slowly swing from the gentle breeze. All seem so tranquil. The summer was nicely warm and sunny, inviting us to enjoy the moment.

Cloud formations fascinate me. They appear seemingly out of nowhere; take the most striking shapes and morph endlessly as they move across the sky. Arcus clouds are long, low, horizontal cloud formations, either forming a striking flat shelf or a roll like a tube, and they usually appear as an accessory cloud to a cumulonimbus.

Aronia berries grow on a quite amazing shrub. Grapes of white flowers steal the show in spring. Purple berries, dark, vibrant, almost black, develop as the year passes. Bright red-purple leaves grace the shrub in fall. Winter closes the cycle, and the Aronia, seemingly suspended in time, bravely waits for the ice and snow to melt.

Dark blue lakes and rivers, bubbling streams and large dams, forested mountain ranges, colorful rock formations, and a dense network of hiking paths. Aquilon is often used to refer to any strong and cold north wind in poetry, while originally being a north-east wind. The Aquilon, and by extension winter, seems to be a promise of what’s to come.
