Knitting: Headband
Following on from the popular Buggiflooer Beanie I’ve designed the Buggiflooer Headband.
Knitting: Slippers
Stjarna Smucks are knitted flat from the back of the foot, down and under the heel. Stitches are cast on over the instep and the foot is worked in the round to the toe. A three-needle cast-off is worked at the toe. The sides of the heel are then seamed closed, and the ribbing is worked at the same time as stitches are picked up from the smuck.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
The construction of “Da Mirknen mitts” use techniques practiced by generations of Shetland knitters. These techniques include a thumb gusset and a folded, patterned cuff so may prove to be a little challenging to a new knitter. Shetland lace was the mainstay of the Shetland knitwear industry during the nineteenth century prior to the popularity of ‘Fair Isle’ knitting. My one remaining pair of gloves made by her has this motif on them. The construction of these mitts are made in the same style so the techniques u...

T A Robertson is a Shetland poet who wrote under the name of Vagaland. He wrote about everyday Shetland life in our native dialect in a vivid and insightful way. I was introduced to his poetry at primary school and became fascinated with names such as Peesterleetie, Terrie Mittens and Trunsher Face! The Vagaland beret is my tribute to him. It i...
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Da fish hat combines Shetland knitting with the colours of the sea and also has a flavour of outside influence with the inclusion of Latvian style braiding. With this pattern I have attempted to reflect some of the traditional and cultural influences that make my home, the Shetland Islands such a special place. Made in 100% Shetland wool, the u...
