Da Mirknen Mitts
The construction of “Da Mirknen mitts” use techniques practiced by generations of Shetland knitters. These techniques include a thumb gusset and a folded, patterned cuff so may prove to be a little challenging to a new knitter. The section of concealed ribbing underneath the folded cuff is designed to maintain the attractiveness of the design on the outside in combination with a snug fit at the wrist and a comfortable double layer for warmth. They feature a Norwegian star motif which became popular in Shetland around World War two due to the influx of Norwegians to Shetland.
I would recommend using 100% Shetland wool for best results, the ultimate in warmth.
The pattern is one size adult but the actual size can be changed using larger or smaller needle sizes.
Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting tends to be close.
In Shetland the ‘mirknen’ is the evening time when it starts to darken (twilight).
