Korkalett Hat

The Korkalett hat features an allover pattern knitted in shades of purple and a pop of red. In the past, to produce yarns of red and purple, wool had to be dyed using the lichen lecanora tartarea. The lichen found growing abundantly on rocks, and the dye made from it, was called Korkalett in Shetland.

The pattern is one size adult but the actual size can be changed using larger or smaller needle sizes. Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting gauge is close. Some people use 2.75mm needles to obtain a matching tension.

The design is offered in a colour way using 8 shades of 2 ply jumper weight from Jamieson’s of Shetland. You will need 1 x 25g ball of each shade. I would recommend using 100% Shetland wool for best results.
