Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Christmas Sock time! This is my seventh year of designing a free sock pattern for Christmas and I really like this tradition. The names may have gotten sillier over the years, but the socks are still fun!

Please note: There was an issue with the chart in the first version. Please make sure you use version 1.2, which has been added a few hours after release. I apologise for the inconvenience.

These socks have a soundtrack. As soon as I started knitting on them, the song Time - Zeit by the German band Coppelius was stuck in my head. Its chorus roughly translate to Time flies, time runs out, never forget you’ll get old my child. Don’t forget. But knit to keep you warm whenever.

Of course, I love my cats, I really do. But sometimes their only goal in life seems to be driving me mad and destroying my home. They are rather hellish creatures if they decide to. These socks are meant to show that side of them. You can of course knit it in the colours of your cats as well, showing their friendly side.

This hat is a quick, fun variation of the Hellcats sock pattern that can easily be knit up in a day or two. I was able to squeeze it out of a 50g ball of my main colour, but you may need slightly more. It was great to use up those little bits left over from a sweater.

This chart was created on a roadtrip. It reminded my on the many patterns used when laying paving stones, a mosaic of their own, if mostly on a rather large scale. It is primarily just fun and easy to work.

Swirling like patterns the wind makes in the sand, this easy to memorise colourwork repeat has more effect over a full sock than the small chart makes you believe at first sight. Very addictive and quick to make, these sock knit up in no time.

These socks were created a long time ago in dk weight yarn, but now it is their time to shine. The simple flower motif reminded me a lot of the iconic allium flowers in Minecraft, hence the name. Easy, repetitive colourwork with a little pop of colour to brighten things up. Perfect summer knitting!

You need to take inspiration where it comes – and this one came from the pattern on a toothbrush. It turned out to be a quick, fun short repeat for a sock as well. Knit them up in summery fun colours to get ready for the season. Garments might be to warm to keep in your lap in summer, but you can always tolerate a sock, can’t you?

When reading the Six of Crows duology, I’m always torn between wanting to be with Kaz Brekker or plainly be Kaz Brekker. Usually, the latter wins out, as I’ve always been drawn to the misfits, the odd one out, the morally grey antiheroes. Inspired by the many brick buildings and decorative patterns that can be found around the area I live in, t...

When you have a chart you like to reuse and blue yarn you will never use for yourself, a hat is in order, to be gifted to someone who will appreciate the colour. Easy and quick, this one is perfect for gift knitting or to try you hand at colourwork.

Year of the Rabbit, Jabberwocky, Easter coming up - there are bunnies everywhere I look. These bunny socks are cute, quick easy to memorise and will help you battle those lingering winter blues.

A proud fishhead can only write so many patterns until there has to be one with fish on it. There is a river close by where they have built a swirly set of stairs for the fish to climb past a small dam and go upstream. I’ve always liked looking the water there, but have never spotted a fish. Instead, they swim down these socks now.

My annual Christmas pattern has become a tradition I like to uphold whenever I can. In 2022, I did not find the necessary yarn in time and published this without a sample. This has been amended now, in January 2023. I hope you enjoy these socks!

These socks were originally meant to be vanilla to test a new-to-me yarn. Then I thought that would be boring, so I went for contrasting cuffs, heels and toes. And then I couldn’t stop myself and added colourwork. Story of my life, really. The cats are heavily inspired by the cat faces Marna Gilligan of An caitin beag is so well known for, but ...

While I don’t much like Christmas as a holiday, I do love the decorations going up everywhere during advent. All the lights! When I was knitting these socks, they reminded me of the big, fancy fairylights hung up in shopping streets, stars, comets, reindeer. Those big lights hanging across the streets and swaying in the wind.

After the Rialto series, we return to the game of Overwatch for inspiration: The map “Ilios” is located in a fictional future Greece and part of it features ruins with traditional buildings, pillars and mosaics. Irresistable to a colourwork knitter who sees the world in charted patterns.

My horse Nixe may not look as delicate as the creature she was named after, but she certainly enjoys playing with water. When we go to the beach, while soft waves roll over the sand, she likes to stick her head into the sea and blow big bubbles. These socks are my tribute to her favourite game.

“Their halls were of pearl and of pearl were the mansions of Olwë at Alqualondë, the Haven of the Swans, lit with many lamps. For that was their city, and the haven of their ships; and those were made in the likeness of swans.”(Tolkien, J.\,R.\,R. 1990: The Silmarillion. London. 1994. 71.)

The name of this pattern is a movie quote, of course. And while I was forced to watch said movie significantly more often than I would have liked, snow and ice are something I long for. And as we do not get any, why not at least knit my own personal flurry of snow for my feet?

Sometimes inspiration strikes from the most surprising places. The colourwork pattern used in this cowl comes from a house in the game Overwatch. Set in a fictional version of Venice, this house has a beautiful tile pattern, that lends itself perfectly for knitting. While I don’t even enjoy playing the game, it is a lot of fun to watch and has ...

The knitting community is incredibly generous at any time, but when it comes to sharing yarn with each other, we shine. The fabulous yarn for this design was given to me by someone called Emma, so obviously, this pattern had to be named after her. Erma is the name today’s Emma probably derives from and I would not be a good medievalist without ...

There are many things I’m on the fence about: Contrasting cuffs, heels and toes on a socks, for example. They always tend to look scrappy, as if you ran out of yarn to do a complete pair of socks. But with just a tiny but of colourwork for the transition, it really looks beautiful, don’t you agree? These almost vanilla socks work up very quickl...

A camera obscura bends and twists rays of light in angles around themselves to produce a picture that is mirrored and upside down. One of them is exhibited in Edinburgh, which I have passed many times but never entered. Outside the building, several mirrors are installed that bend your reflection in weird shapes. These socks explore the path of...

John Oliver imagined the Scots thinking the only flower they might pick for their country would have to be one that could pierce an Englishman’s throat. While this totally is something to be expected of them, the actual beauty of a huge variety of purple flowering thistles in the dark pine woods of the Scottish Highlands should not be overlooked.

A friend brought some Mondim yarn from a trip to Lissabon qnd I knew two things: It had to become socks, and they had to include a lot of colourwork. The colours reminded me of the sea I live close to: green seaweed, dark blue sea, white foam. A swarm of fish surrounded by green weeds, lots of easy to remember colourwork and frequent colour cha...

Having a horse can be challenging at times, as it forces you to go outside in every weather. At least against the cold, we as knitters can do something! This is where these mitts or halfgloves started. Knowing I would work at lot, stuffing hay into feeding nets, holding leading ropes, handling grain, I wanted my hands warm and cosy, but my fing...

Inspired by the brown and grey of a forest in winter, when all the leaves have fallen and been covered by snow, this is a close fitting, warm cowl with an easy stranded motif. Using sportweight yarn and rather large needles, it knits up quickly and makes a wonderful gift.
