Young Scrappy Hat
A fun, scrappy companion piece to the Young, Scrappy, and Cozy cowl. that’s perfect for using up bits and bobs of yarn. This pattern has been updated on Oct 3, 2020 to include the chart spelling out “VOTE” on the brim (the pattern still includes the Rise Up chart).
Sized for adults and older kids in DK weight yarn, the hat is worked with a series of (mosaic) slipped stitches on the brim, and stranded colorwork on the crown. Like the cowl, the Young Scrappy Hat spells out “RISE UP” in the mosaic colorwork in the brim and includes a full, charted mosaic alphabet (right side up!) that lets you add whichever words or monogram you choose.
Instructions for the slip stitch pattern on the brim is written out as is the mosaic chart for RISE UP . The simple stranded colorwork pattern on the crown of the hat is charted only.
A word about gauge:
Be more concerned about matching gauge on the stranded colorwork section of the hat. The brim is a slip stitch pattern that is sized and designed to stretch, so it’s supposed to be a bit smaller than the crown. What I did was this: I knew I’d get 22 sts/4” in stranded knitting with the DK yarn on a size 6 needle, so I went down two needle sizes for the brim. Et voilá! In the words of Lafayette (in Hamilton), it was “how you say?” Perfect.
Materials:
1(1, 1) skein each of Miss Babs Yowza (560 yds/226 g skein) in the Main Color (MC, show in colorway Old Gold) and in the Contrasting Color 1 (CC1, the color of the brim, shown in Echo), CC2 (shown in Aubergine), and CC3 (shown in Dusk), or
80 (95, 105) yards of DK weight yarn in the MC (Old Gold)
