MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
The Bempton Jumper is inspired by my total and absolute love of traditional fisherman’s gansays. The history behind them represents everything I treasure about knitting – a hand-crafted garment designed to keep the wearer warm, dry and wrapped in the comfort of something made with care and love.

I adore this stitch pattern. It may look intricate, but it’s actually just a four-row repeat. Once you settle into its rhythm, you can relax and enjoy the knitting process. You only cable on one of those four rows, meaning there’s just a single row of twisting, followed by three rows of simple knit and purl. If you’re new to cabling or garment knitting, you can practise the stitch on the Bempton Hat or the Bempton Mittens.

The sleeves are rib only so all the cable work is on the body. This jumper is unisex and because of the ribbing fits your body shape before diving into the jumper.

The sleeves feature a classic rib, keeping all the cable detail on the body. This unisex design is wonderfully versatile – thanks to the ribbing, it naturally fits to your shape. If you prefer a closer, more fitted style, try knitting a size smaller for a negative ease effect. Or, for a more relaxed, oversized look, you can knit one with positive ease a size or two larger than your usual size.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are set in. The neck edge is picked up and knitted.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at the armhole and neck shaping, one simple cable, cast off, picking up stitches at neck edge. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.

YARN
6(7:7:8) 100g hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran – Undyed 100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.

NOTIONS
Cable needle.

GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm/4ins square over main pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a negative to positive ease of at 0-6”/0-15cm at the chest.
