Anne Hanson’s new book of twelve lace scarves and shawls is an interesting and meaningful read with a dozen beautiful patterns that are each versatile and engaging.

The Lace Lessons is meant to be a useful resource for lace knitters, particularly those who are taking on lace for the first time or struggling to enjoy its allure. While not a formal manual for skill building by any means, the “lessons” are in the designs themselves— the kind we absorb by example and by doing, and not always related to actual knitting. There is very little in the way of special lace instruction contained here—some snippets
of advice derived by hindsight, plus a lot of persistent nudging to just try things, challenge oneself, and experiment, no matter how incautiously. It’s only knitting after all … what could go wrong?
