Zickety

A nifty cushion cover, formed from colourful modular hexagons. “Zickety” is an old Scots word, used in children’s counting rhymes

Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed (70% Wool; 30% Mohair; 100m / 109yds per 25g ball)
6-20 balls (see step 1 of instructions)

Needles and notions
Gauge-size needles of your preferred type for working small circumferences
Two long gauge-size circular needles (for pick up)
Gauge size dpn (for working icord and three-needle bind off)
Lockable stitch markers or bulb pins
Tapestry needle
3 buttons (approx. 1.5cm / ½ in diameter)
 
Gauge
When blocked each hexagon measures 9.25cm / 3½in from point to point.
Use 3mm needles as a starting point for swatching.
 
Size
To fit small cushion pad 32x32cm / 12x12in

Pattern notes
Each hexagon module is knitted in the round, from its outer edges in. After the first hexagon is complete, subsequent hexagons are picked up and knitted from the edges of those adjacent to create a shape which, when folded and joined with a three-needle bind off along each long side, transforms itself into a square envelope, with an opening at the top. Two garter stitch edgings are picked up and shaped along each edge of the opening, completed with i-cord bind off and buttonholes, and two tiny seams are stitched, giving a neat finish to the envelope. When three buttons are stitched in place, the cover is complete.
