Yongbao (Mandarin for hug or embrace):

  • Full sized it’s a shawl and a shrug - wear like a regular shawl or snuggle your arms through the doubled sections
  • Half sized it’s a scarf -wrap round your neck & secure with doubled sections
  • Scale down again & you have a neckwarmer - wear loose, or secure with doubled sections

The pattern includes:

  • Fully tested instructions for all 3 sizes of Yongbao in both lace weight and sock weight yarns
  • Calculations for working all three sizes at 4 different stitch gauges
  • Separate, step by step photo tutorial on how to work the double sections

You will get the warmest, snuggliest, drapiest version of the large shawl if you knit in a lace weight yarn that has some loft or haze (such as pure cashmere, wool/cashmere, wool/mohair or wool/yak blends - a quiviut blend would be indulgently fabulous!!!!)

Pure wools and sock weight yarns will give you a heavier, slightly less drapey shawl, but work particularly well if you want to add texture or colourwork patterns to the doubled sections.
