I wanted to make a unisex cabled hat for Winter. I love cables and wanted something that was both fun and quick to knit. The cable to me looked like a wheatsheaf in a field, but others have described it as being like a kiss :)
The brim is ribbed (K1,P1) and can be made longer in Version 2 for a double thick folded brim which will be snuggly warm. The pattern is very stretchy and will fit most heads between 16-22 inches for the smaller size and 22-25 inches for the m/l. The main difference between the Adult S and M/L is the depth of the hat and the cast on for the brim.
The sizing is achieved by moving up a needle size and for the M/L size I used a 5.5mm/US9 circular needle for the main part of the hat. The hats are unisex and you have the option to add a pompom for a bit of Winter fun.
A note on needle sizes. I used a 4mm needle for my ribbing with the Debbie Bliss BFL Aran and it was perfect for me in both the S and M/L sizes. However, one of our test knitters used an acrylic blend yarn and found that she needed to use a smaller needle and dropped to a 3.75mm needle.
The cable pattern has both charted and written instructions.
Gauge/Tension for body of hat unstretched:
16sts x 32 rows = 3in x 4in/7.5cm x 10cm with 5mm/US8
16sts x 32rows = 3 5/8th in 9.25cm x 4in/7.5cm x 10cm with 5.5mm/US9
