The mittens are designed to match the Wheatsheaf Cowl, Wheatsheaf Hat and Wheatsheaf Boot Cuffs/Toppers. I love cables and wanted something that was both fun and quick to knit. This cable pattern reminded me of a Wheatsheaf at harvest time, though some say it reminds them of warm Winter Kisses?
Tension/Gauge Mitten
Small 20 sts and 28 rows in stocking st = 4 inch/10cm using 4mm needles
Medium 18 sts and 24 rows in stocking st = 4 inch/10cm using 4.5mm needles
Large 16 sts and 22 rows in stocking st = 4 inch/10cm using 5mm needles.
XL 16 sts and 20 rows in stocking st = 4 inch/10cm usin 5.5mm needles.
The edging is ribbed (K1, P1) and can be made longer for a double thick folded cuff which will be snuggly warm around the wrists on cold days, and stop draughts.
There are both charts and full written instructions. Sizing is achieved by using smaller or larger needles. For example, it is possible to make a Large size mitten using 5mm or 5.5mm to achieve an XL.
The only adjustment you’ll need to make is the length of the thumb to suit the recipient which could be longer or shorter. I made a medium for myself and shortened the thumb length for my shorter hands.
The mittens are worked in the round using either circular needles (magic loop) or double pointed needles (dpns) and are worked bottom up from cuff to finger tips.
