When you look straight at the knitting you see only stripes; when you look from the side you see an illusion of Vincent Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat. The portrait was painted in 1887 and is in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
The finished size of the illusion is approximately 68 cm x 80 cm (27” x 32”), when using DK yarn. Any thickness of yarn can be used but this could change the overall size of the panel.
I used 420 metres (460 yards) DK in each of two colours.
I chose Denim and Parchment because these seemed appropriate from the original painting. I would recommend using slightly more contrasting colours if you want the illusion to be more defined.
