Valancy's Island
Finished Measurements:
• Wingspan 62” (157.5 cm)
• Depth at Center Back 19” (48.25 cm)
Materials: 1 skein (875 yards/100 grams) Tactile Fiber Arts Studio Ferndale Lace (100% Merino), color Kelp
Needles: size US 2 (2.75 mm) long circular, optional pointy double-pointed needle for bind off
Extras: at least 4 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking tools
Gauge: 30 sts and 40 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch, post blocking
Be aware that any difference in gauge will change the size of your finished shawl, as well as the amount of yarn you need to knit it - more stitches to the inch will mean a smaller shawl using less yarn, and vice versa.
Notes
This shawl starts with a starter tab and works out and down, combining edge increases with periodic increases in the middle of the work - the rows in the Stockinette Section which have yarn overs. The last of these increase rows happens right before the lace.
When the pattern calls for you to “work plain”, work either RS or WS Rows as they appear in the Definitions section.
The Woods Chart is bordered by faggoting, which has pattern stitches on both the right and wrong sides. In those rows you work plain up to the marker at the edge of the Woods Chart, work from the chart, and then work plain to the end of the row.
The picot bind off may be a little tricky but it blocks beautifully. It may help to have a super pointy double-pointed needle to work the bind off.
