Toast

Large art-deco clamshells unite in the shape of a giant piece of toast: Rebecca’s migraineur comfort food. Knit a full slice as a personal blanket, or a half-slice cut on the diagonal for an oversized shawl. Knit either shape in two colours for simple buttered toast or a colourful version with every colour of jam.

Gauge
24 sts and 48 rows to 10cm / 4in over garter on gauge-size needle.
Use 3.25mm needle as a starting point for swatching.
Gauge is achieved using garter stitch. Gauge need not be strictly followed, but a significantly larger gauge will affect the amount of yarn needed, and will increase the size of an already large piece.

Pattern notes
This large shawl is knit in modular sections, starting with two semi-circles knit separately at the bottom. After adding one half-clamshell to the right side of one semi-circle, they are joined together into one piece with a clamshell between them. From there, clamshells and half-clamshells are built on each other, until the half-slice shape is achieved. From there, move to the half-slice border, or fill out the other half of the slice with more clamshells and half-clamshells, finishing with a border of crust. Each clamshell has a fiddly beginning, but stretches of repetitive garter make it easy to relax into each chunk. Instructions are given to use locking stitch markers to keep track of where you are between increase rows. What grain of bread and condiment will you choose?
