Sunflower Applique
The official name of this design is “Free Crochet Sunflower Applique Pattern”. If you need a pretty applique for embellishing your projects or mending holes in your kids’ clothes, I invite you to make use of this free pattern.
If you crochet this little flower using brown and yellow yarn / crochet thread / embroidery floss as pictured here, it sort of resembles an abstract sunflower. If you work this pattern using other colors, it can come out looking like some other sort of flower instead.
The sunflower’s petals are pointed and just a little bit curvy, resulting in graceful lines.
Materials You’ll Need for Working This Pattern:
You can use any weight of yarn, crochet thread or embroidery floss to work this pattern. I’ve crocheted this design multiple times using different materials; you can see additional, larger photos of this project at my website if you’re interested in seeing examples of how it turns out when made using different weights of yarn.
It can be a little challenging to find good yellow and gold crochet threads and yarns. One possible solution to that problem: Crochet your sunflowers using embroidery floss, because you have a huge selection of colors to work with that way.
Another solution if is to use Cascade 220 medium-weight wool yarn, which has a spectacular color palette.
Then once you’ve chosen a fiber to work with, select a crochet hook that’s a suitable size for working with that fiber. If you work with materials intended for crochet, you’ll usually find a suggested hook size on the yarn label.
I worked the sample flower pictured here using embroidery floss and a 1.65 mm steel crochet hook.
Crochet Stitches You’ll Need to Know for Working This Pattern:
If you haven’t yet learned any of these stitches, please feel free to use our free crochet stitch tutorials and instructions for brushing up on how to do them.

I’ve designed many other crocheted sunflowers and other flowers you might also enjoy in addition to this one.
I welcome your feedback on the pattern; if you have comments or questions, please leave a comment on the pattern page at my website instead of here at Ravelry. I’m not able to spend as much time at Ravelry as I’d like, so I am not likely to see and respond to questions in a timely manner if you post them here.
Thanks for your interest! Happy crocheting.
