Study of the Butterflies
Study of the Butterflies is a pattern from the third book by the Guy with the Hook. It is inspired by the migration of the monarch butterfly in Mexico.
Hook size needed: 1,75mm, 3.0mm (D), 4.0mm (F).
Yarn needed: I made three examples of the butterfly in different types of yarn and weights. You need a few grams of yarn for each color used – in every kind of yarn, so it is a great idea just to collect some scrap yarns and create a fun color set together. Ten grams of yarn for each color is always a safe amount of yarn to have.
Color combination one (orange):
The orange color combination is made with Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 306 yards. The yarn consists of 100% cotton. You will use a 1.75mm crochet hook for this type of yarn. Colors used:
Color A: colorway 403 Lemonade
Color B: colorway 154 Gold
Color C: colorway 411 Sweet Orange
Color D: colorway 281 Tangerine
Color E: colorway 388 Rust
Color F: colorway 110 Jet black
Color combination two (green):
The green color combination is made with Scheepjes Catona, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 138 yards. The yarn consists of 100% mercerized cotton. You will use a 3.0mm crochet hook for this type of yarn. Colors used:
Color A: colorway 130 Old Lace
Color B: colorway 392 Lime Juice
Color C: colorway 205 Kiwi
Color D: colorway 412 Forest Green
Color E: colorway 515 Emerald
Color F: colorway 110 Jet black
Color combination three (blue):
The blue color combination is made with Scheepjes Merino Soft, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 115 yards. The yarn consists of 50% merino wool/ 25% acrylic/ 25% microfiber. You will use a 4.0mm crochet hook for this type of yarn. Colors used:
Color A: colorway 628 Botticelli
Color B: colorway 615 Soutine
Color C: colorway 617 Cezanne
Color D: colorway 643 Ansingh
Color E: colorway 643 Ansingh
Color F: colorway 601 Pollock
Other materials needed: a photo frame without a glass wall of size by choice is required. I took a rectangular shape from 12 inches x 8 inches, but any size will do as you can make as many or fewer butterflies as you like. Besides the photo frame, you will need some black pins to put into the butterfly as the antenna. Two for each butterfly are required. I used standard pins, which are mainly used for sewing.
Size: The size of the butterfly is measured from wing to wing in width and height.
The smallest version in Maxi Sugar Rush will have 3 inches in width and 2 inches in height.
The middle version in Catona will have 4 inches in width and 3 inches in height.
The biggest version in Merino Soft will have 5 inches in width and 4 inches in height.
The pattern contains written instructions guided by a chart. It is available in English (US terms) and Dutch. After purchase, you can download a PDF file in your preferred language.
