Salty Sardines
I am always in the mood for something sea-related. After creating the Jolly Jellyfish pattern, I felt more sea-related patterns would come up. So, meet the Salty Sardines—a fun and quick pattern to make and perfect to use up some scraps. Make them in every color of the rainbow and create as many as you like to create a whole flock of sardines! They are perfect for decorating your home; hang them with a small thread in front of the window, lay them in a bowl in the kitchen, or make one in a robust cotton type of yarn as a playing toy for your cat! Options are endless! Enjoy this fun and cute pattern!
General information about the pattern:
Yarn Requirements: I have used Scheepjes Stonewashed for this pattern. Scheepjes Stonewashed is an 80% cotton and 20% acrylic yarn that comes in balls of 50 grams and lengths of 130 meters. One sardine exists out of one base color and three contrast colors. For the eyes, I used black and white. I made three color versions.
Blue colorway:
Color A:802 Smokey Quartz (20 grams of yarn needed – 52 meters)
Color B:813 Amazonite (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color C:824 Turquoise (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color D:805 Blue Apatite (3 grams of yarn needed – 8 meters)
Color E:803 Black Onyx (2 grams of yarn needed – 6 meters)
Color F:801 Moonstone (2 grams of yarn needed – 6 meters)
Yarn colors and amounts for Colors A, E, and F are the same for each colorway.
Green colorway:
Color B:819 Canada Jade (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color C:826 Fosterite (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color D:825 Malachite (3 grams of yarn needed – 8 meters)
Brown colorway:
Color B:831 Axinite (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color C :804 Boulder Opal (5 grams of yarn needed – 13 meters)
Color D:822 Brown Agate (3 grams of yarn needed – 8 meters)
Crochet hooks needed:
You will use a 3.0mm and 4.0mm hook for this type of yarn. A full-size crochet hook is smaller for the eyes, while a larger size is used for the entire body.
Size: In the suggested type of yarn, the sardine will have a length of 11 inches and a width of 3 inches.
Other materials needed:
For this pattern, you need a small amount of other materials:
- Fiberfill (about 10 grams for a sardine)
- Transparent textile glue (optional, as you can also sew on the eyes)
- Depending on how you attach the eyes, you will need a sewing needle or some iron pins.
The pattern is beginner-friendly and includes clear, written instructions and numerous photos to guide you. The pattern is available in English (US) and Dutch.
