Strandgut Scarf
STRANDGUT
Whenever I spend time at the beach, my gaze goes straight down to the ground. Driftwood in all shapes and sizes, shells, seaglass, pieces of flint, and the occasional cuttlefish bone. It is a bit like thrifting, you never know what you will find. “Strandgut” is the German word for all kinds of flotsam and jetsam, which is represented by the darker stripes in the scarf. The waves go in and out in a random way, which is also very forgiving when you forgot where exactly you were in the pattern. Worked entirely in garter stitch, this is also a great first project for intarsia beginners.
Size
154 cm × 40 cm / 60 in × 15 in
(length × width)
Yarn
The sample Strandgut is worked in Lamana Como in two different colours and Lamana Premia. I highly recommend using the original yarn for this project, at least for the “main” yarn. Lamana Como has a unique, super light construction that makes it look and behave like a DK weight yarn, but at a fraction of the weight. If you want to use a different yarn, go by the gauge and the thickness of the yarn (i.e., DK weight), not by yardage per weight.
You need about 480 m / 524 yds in your main yarn in Colour A, 450 m / 493 yds in your main yarn in Colour B, and 140 m / 153 yds in the fuzzy lace yarn in Colour C. The pattern can easily be adjusted in length; you do not need to buy extra balls “just in case”.
Gauge and needles
21 sts × 39 rows = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 in, worked
flat in garter stitch in the “main” yarn, after washing.
Gauge is not too crucial for this pattern.
The pattern uses written instructions and charts. You have to be able to read coloured charts in order to use this pattern. All measurements in the pattern are given in metric and imperial. The German version has metrial measurements only.
