Spring Thing Tweed
Spring Thing Tweed Top
This combines an ageless silhouette with classic fabric to create an on trend item that could be worn for decades.
Tweed fabric has a long history. It has been worn from the likes of Dr. Watson, Dr. Who and Dr. Jones (Indiana was the dog), royalty and is the foundation of the iconic Chanel suit. The idea that with a few basic stitches you could create your own tweed, in any color combo you wanted was something that I got really excited about. Something classic, but with a twist.
The Spring Thing is light weight and colorful. It has feminine shaping and a flirty cap sleeve. With a change of colors it could go from a fun, hippie look to a sophisticated top you could wear under a suit.
The top was named by my daughter, who is hoping for warmer weather and trips to the beach to begin ASAP. At the time these photos were taken, it was 37 degrees
outside.
This pattern has a picture tutorial, schematics and charts that show repeats, neck line and shoulder shaping. There is also a video on yarn selection, steam blocking and post stitches on my website.
Size
This sweater comes in 7 sizes, ranging from X Small out to XXX Large. To Fit Bust sizes range from 28 in./71 cm. up to 52 in./132 cm.
Fit
This top has a classic fit, with 2-4 in. / 5-10 cm. of positive ease. Model is a medium with a 36 inch bust, wearing a size small. The Extra Small and Small would be suitable for a large child or pre-teen.
Yarn Amounts Required
Main color: 370 (400, 450, 510, 570, 610, 700) yards of sport weight yarn.
Contrasting colors: 40 (40, 50, 60, 60, 60, 70) yards each of 7 different contrasting colors.
If you weigh out your scrap yarn for contrasting color, you will need 11 ( 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 21) grams of yarn.
Yarn used
I used Classic Elites Mika, 100% Organic DK weight yarn. Classic Elites has, unfortunately gone out of business. This yarn is a heavy Sport weight/light DK that works up on a G/4.25 MM crochet hook. I recommend Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek DK, Takhi Classic Cotton Light, Berroco Modern Cotton as substitutes.
Additional materials
G / 4.25 mm Crochet Hook, 2 stitch markers, needle for weaving in ends.
