Shallow Waters Hat
“Shallow Waters” is a classic beanie with a folded brim for extra warmth, and little bit of a slouch at the top. It is decorated with mosaic (slip stitch) colorwork print, that resembles gentle ripples on the surface of a pond, which gave the hat its name.
The hat is worked bottom-up in the round. Intended to be worn with 5-10% of negative ease.
It is also part of a collection, with a top-down shawl and a stole - you can get all 3 patterns as an e-book, or get only the shape you want with a 15% discount (applied automatically, if you’ve already bought the hat pattern).
The pattern includes 4 sizes:
Toddler (Child, Adult S-M, Adult L-XL) for own head circumference of 46-48, (50-52, 55-57, 60-62) cm or 18-19 (19.75-20.5, 21.75-22.5, 23.5-24.5)”, intended to be worn with 5-10% of negative ease.
If you are between sizes, simply take 0.25mm/1 US size larger needles, than the size with which you got gauge, and work the slightly smaller size.
Yarn:
The pattern is knit in sport weight yarn (~250-300m/ 275-330yds per 100g/3.5oz) with high wool content. Best to choose soft yarns with little halo in solid/ tonal color, or a long gradient to best show off the print.
You will need:
- MC: 110 (140, 180, 230) m / 120 (155, 195, 250) yds
- CC: 60 (80, 90, 110) m / 65 (85, 100, 120) yds
The sample was knit out of Madelinetosh Pashmina in adult S-M size.
- Main color (MC) – 50g/1.8oz, Pecan Hull colorway
- Contrast color (CC) – 25g/0.9oz, Moonglow colorway
If you wish, you can work the brim in CC (same color as the print),
in this case required MC and CC yardage will be opposite.
Needles:
- Main – 3mm/ US 2 ½ (or size to get gauge) circulars on 40cm/16” cable + DPN’s for the crown
- Smaller – 2.75mm/ US 2 (or 1 size smaller than the main ones) for the cast-on
