Gulfstream Cardigan
About the pattern
Gulfstream is a cozy loose-fitting open-front cardigan (intended to be worn with 5-15cm/2-6”of positive ease). It can be worn with a belt or a shawl pin to close.
It is medium length, just covering the buttocks for extra warmth in the winter months.
Its main decorative feature is a 2-color short-row shawl collar with broken rib texture throughout the body for added interest.
The pattern name is based on the print similarity with waves, together with the Scottish origin of the yarn used for the sample.
Construction
The cardigan is worked in 1 piece flat sideways, from one cuff to the other one. Once you finish the body, seam it at the sides, then pick up stitches at the bottom to work the hem and finally knit on the shawl collar.
Please note, this construction, combined with stretchy nature of broken rib texture, makes it rather difficult to adjust the model for a different gauge! It is highly recommended to follow the suggestions on yarn selection and get the exact gauge to avoid unpleasant surprises with a super-long/ short cardigan in the end.
Given that, it is easy to adjust the length by working a shorter/ longer hem (best to block beforehand to see how the fabric behaves under its own weight) - in this case you will only need to adjust the shawl collar pick up and starting point.
Sizes
The pattern includes 7 sizes, for own bust 80-153 cm or 32-60” (the garment is intended to be worn with 5-15cm/2-6”of positive ease)
See table and schematic in the pattern photos on the left for further details on sizing and corresponding yarn requirements.
Yarn (see yardages per size in pattern photos)
DK to light-worsted weight wool (180-230m/200-250yds per 100g/3.5oz) in 2 contrasting colors.
Best to choose a yarn with very airy structure (e.g. woollen-spun) to achieve a warm yet light-weight garment.
Choose yarns with high wool content and NO non-stretch fibers (e.g. silk, cotton, linen, nylon, except in tweed nups) – this will result in a much shorter cardigan than intended. Using 100% superwash merino or yarns with high alpaca content (>50%) may result in a longer cardigan than intended.
Original sample was knit out of Glafira’s Yarn ‘Blueface-Masham’ (75% Blueface Leicester, 25% Masham; 240m/260yds per 100g/3.5oz) - sadly, the yarn was discarded from commercial sale.
Suggested commercial substitutes: Brooklyn Tweed ‘Arbor’,
Drops ‘Karisma’
Needles
You will need circular needles in 2 sizes and 2 cable lengths for convenience (60cm/24” cable for the sleevs and 100cm/40” cable for the body)
- Main: 4mm/US6 (or size to get texture gauge!)
- Smaller (I-cords, cuffs, hem, collar pick-up): 3.5mm/US4 (or 0.5mm/2 sizes smaller than the main)
