From the pattern description: Norway’s oldest knitting tradition is two-stranded knitting with both strands from the same ball of yarn. As history records, it was a creative young knitter in the Selbu, a small northerly district, who first tried using two contrasting color yarns in her mittens. She wore her mittens to church and they became an instant hit. Among the many patterns that later developed, the favorite was the sjenn-rosa or eight-petaled rose, which we know as the Norwegian star. Selbu knitters are also famous for the moose, reindeer, and hand-holding dancers motifs, worked in high-contrast colors such as white on black.
