Selachimorpha
Selachimorpha is the scientific name for the modern shark. This sock celebrates the awesome shark!
Constructed top down, alternating lace and solid triangles hint at shark fins rising above the waves as they swim past. A standard flap heel using the Eye of Partridge stitch replicates the rough texture of shark skin. The lace patterning opens up the fabric considerably and sizing is a generous 22cm/8” around unstretched for the medium size (medium size is shown in the photo).
It is important to note that sizing in this sock is achieved by change of gauge using different needle sizes and yarn weights instead of differing stitch counts.
Yarn ideas for sizing are noted in the pattern, but you are very welcome to select your own! A basic guideline is as follows:
Small: Super fine sock yarn that has a yardage of OVER 400m/437yd per 100g (eg. Regia, Wollemeise, Touch Yarns Magic Merino Sock). Suggested needle size: 2mm
Gauge: 9 stitches per 1”/2.5cm
Finished size: 7”/18cm leg unstretched.
Medium: Standard weight sock yarn that has a yardage of 400m/437yd or LESS per 100g (eg. Knitsch 100% merino sock yarn, Dream in Colour Smooshy, Sokkusu “O”, Koigu KPPPM)
Suggested needle size: 2.25mm
Gauge: 8 stitches per 1”/2.5cm
Finished size: 8”/20cm leg unstretched.
Large: Sock yarn with less than 400m/437yd per 100g (similar yarns to the medium size will be fine, This sock has generous width).
Suggested needle size: 2.5mm
Gauge: 7 stitches per 1”/2.5cm
Finished size: 8.5”/21cm leg unstretched.
Charts for left and right foot are included for those who like mirrored socks. It is your choice as to whether to knit just one chart for both feet or mirror the pattern. Written instructions are also included for those who prefer not to work from charts.
