Salamanca Hat
The Salamanca Hat is a perfect project for when you’re craving an engaging accessory knit. Whether it’s changing your needle size or switching textures, there’s always something happening to keep you interested. It doesn’t hurt that the finished hat looks great and goes with everything too!

Knitcraft & Knittery Aran Weight Merino (100% Merino; 166m {180yds}/100g), 1 skein Murphy Brown colourway, or 100g Aran weight yarn
Sample used approximately 85g (141m {153yds}) for Adult Large hat, slouchy version, and 15g (25m {27yds}) for the pom pom.
Please note that the yardage requirements will vary depending on the hat circumference, length, and any differences in gauge.
NEEDLES & NOTIONS
4.5mm (US 7), 5mm (US 8) and 5.5mm (US 9) at least 100cm (40”) length circular needles, double-pointed needles or short 40cm (16”) circular needles (see first note, below), or size to obtain gauge and both a needle size smaller and larger
Stitch marker/progress keeper (optional)
Tapestry needle
Tape measure
Scissors
Small 6.5cm (2 ½“) diameter pom pom maker (optional)
Please note that pom poms may present a choking hazard for children aged 3 years and under. If you make the hat with pom poms, you may need to include a choking hazard warning label to that effect on the finished product.
GAUGE
15.5 stitches x 25 rounds = 10cm (4”) in seed stitch on middle (5mm {US 8}) needle size, knit in the round and relaxed after blocking.
Seed stitch (worked over an even number of stitches):
Rnd 1: * p1, k1 * to end.
Rnd 2: * k1, p1 * to end.
NOTES
–The Salamanca Hat is worked in the round and can be knit using double-pointed needles, a short circular needle, long circular needle, or a combination of these (if using a short circular needle, you may need to switch to double-pointed needles when shaping the top of the hat). Sample was knit using a long circular needle and the Magic Loop method of working in the round.
–You have the option of making either a hat that will sit fitted around the crown of the head, or one with a slightly slouchy fit. If desired, you also have the option of working a longer brim than specified (note that this will affect your final measurements and yardage requirements).
