Roots is a cropped hybrid sweater that I designed for and with Anastasia, the dyer behind Wool & Dye, a young and promising yarn label, focused on sustainability, reduced ecological impact and responsibly and ethically-sourced yarn.
The beautiful yarn Anastasia sent to me, a non-superwash merino dyed with madder roots, yellow dock and coffee, one of the softest I have ever had in my hands, inspired a simple and minimalistic design, able to return the beauty of this yarn and its delicate and bright color, and to recall the sense of bonding with nature that Anastasia cares so much about.
That’s why a simple cable, symbolizing both plants and human roots, both equally clinging to Mother Earth, is the only detail embellishing the sweater.

Approx. 5-8” positive ease recommended at bust (already incorporated in the finished bust sizes).

Yarn: DK weight yarn in the following quantities: 1100 (1200, 1350, 1500, 1700, 1900, 2050) m / 1200 (1315, 1480, 1640, 1860, 2080, 2240) yards
Please be aware that yarn quantities are only estimated. Be sure to have a small buffer for swatches and in case additional yarn is needed.
Yarn used for the sample: Garden Wool & Dye Co. DK 100% Sustainable Merino, 254 yards / 100 gr, naturally dyed with Madder Root, Yellow Dock and Coffee.
Needles: 3.5 mm (US size 4), 3.75 mm (US size 5) and 4 mm (US size 6): 24” / (60 cm) or longer circular for Body; 3.75 mm (US size 5) and 4 mm (US size 6): DPNs or 40” (100 cm) circular for Sleeves; 3.75 mm (US size 5) 16” / 40 cm for the yoke and the collar. Crochet hook 3.5 mm (E).
Notions: removable markers; waste yarn; tapestry needle.

La bella lana fornitami da Anastasia, una merino non-superwash tinta con robbia, romice crespa e caffè, una delle più soffici che abbia avuto in mano, mi ha ispirato un modello semplice e minimalista, capace di rendere la bellezza e il delicato colore del filato, e di richiamare il legame con Madre Natura a cui Anastasia tiene così tanto.
Ecco perché una semplice treccia, che simboleggia le radici che legano piante e uomini alla terra, è l’unico dettaglio che impreziosisce il maglione.
