The Rip Cord Hat is the second in a trio of patterns designed to introduce and demonstrate various uses for the Showy & Subtle Decrease. The Showy Decrease is a modification of the standard k2tog or ssk decrease that adds height and texture to patterns. This one builds upon the diagonal showy lines used in the Vortex Hat with two different types of vertical decreases that allow the lines to seamlessly flow to the top. The hat is finished with a Double Decker hat top which adds even more depth to the top of the hat.

If you are a beginner knitter, the Vortex Hat with rib brim is easier to start with. It’s a little tricky to knit seamless vertical decreases, however, the pattern does include a few simpler options for less experienced knitters.

Additional Yarn and Gauge Information:
The pattern includes 5 gauges from 3.5 to 5.5 stitches per inch.
The yarn should be something springy, like merino, that will hold and show raised texture or is light and lofty like the Ariosa. Other recommendations are: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, Cascade Venezia or Cashvero. Crystal Palace Mochi Plus for the color change.
