The Ribbonwood Blanket is a square version of my Ribbonwood triangular shawl. The Ribbonwood motif is one of my absolute favourites, and is based on the entwined inner bark of our native New Zealand Ribbonwood tree.

This throw is knit in fingering weight yarn, but knit in laceweight yarn it makes a special shawl or wrap.

The blanket is knit circularly from the centre out. One iteration of the Ribbonwood motif advances down each quarter of the wrap, then grows into three, and finally expands into a deep cabled lace border. I devised a decorative central spine motif which is used to expand the piece as grows into a large square. This little flower-like motif is picked up again at the very edge of the shawl and ties everything together in a cabled-lace extravaganza.

For additional information on how to work the 5 stitch lift and 3 stitch lift, please refer to this blog post.

This pattern includes charts, and detailed information on how to use them and I’ve included tips and tricks to ensure that your epic blanket knitting is as relaxing as possible.

I used Vintage Purls Superstar, a yarn local to me, but yarn can easily be substituted for any fingering weight yarn.
