Established in 1938 and encompassing almost a million acres, Olympic National Park protects what was deemed “the nest sample of primeval forests of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, Douglas fir, and western red-cedar in the entire United States.” Today visitors can stand among these ancient giants in the moss covered temperate rainforests of the park. Twelve to fourteen feet of yearly rainfall nourish the lush understory which includes shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers. This diverse park also offers glacier topped mountains, and miles and miles of wild Pacific coastline where visitors can hike, fish, and camp.
