Mangrove
Everglades National Park in Florida is the largest sub-tropical wilderness in the US. The park was established in 1947 to protect the remaining South Florida wetlands from development. Today it encompasses 1.5 million acres of wetlands, and is home to a myriad of endangered species including manatees and Florida panthers. The park also protects the largest contiguous stand of mangrove trees in the northern hemisphere. The mangroves thrive in the intertidal zone and their twining root systems help stabilize the coastal lands and buffer the effects of storms. The dense tangles of roots also provide habitat for a variety of small fish and invertebrates.
