Portalla's Cushion
This pattern uses the same rib and cable design as the Portalla Jumper from my Simple Knits book. I love creating patterns where the stitches take you on a journey — starting with a smooth, calming panel at the base, before moving into the joyful rhythm of crossover cables. It’s like the stitches enjoy a gentle stroll before breaking into a little dance!
I originally knitted one of these cushions for my sofa in a beautiful natural shade, and it’s always the cushion everyone reaches for when they have a choice of where to sit. If you’ve visited my Skipton Studio, you might have seen my unique felted version too — I use it a little differently, but it’s equally loved.
It’s tricky to show scale online — this isn’t your average cushion size. This is a BIG cushion — a proper statement piece that makes an impact wherever you place it. Mine sits on the chair that no one is really allowed to sit on… except perhaps Lana the dog, who has a habit of sneaking onto it the moment I leave the room (though she’s not supposed to). She knows a good wool cushion when she sees one!
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in two pieces, three sides are joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, two simple cables, buttonholes and cast off. Joining seams. Sewing on buttons. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your seams: mattress stitch.
YARN
Ten 50g balls of Donegal Aran Tweed.
100% pure new wool, 80m/88yds per 50g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.
NOTIONS
Cable needle (optional).
Cushion pad to fit (approx. 60cm x 60cm).
Five buttons (size is approx. 380mm in diameter).
GAUGE (tension)
17 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch rib. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
54cm x approx. 55cm.
