This edge-first scarf has a pretty lace border that is a variation on the classic pineapple crochet standard. The piquant part of the name comes from the difficulty rating that knitty.com uses; piquant means a pattern that is “daring but not exhausting.” Aside from the delightful alliteration, the description fits well: the fourteen row lace pattern isn’t for beginners but it is easy to memorise after the first few repeats. It creates a gorgeous undulating edge and once you’ve finished the edging the rest of the shawl comes together in a flash with simple short row turns to form a shallow crescent.
