The Northern Winds Shawl is wonderfully warm and perfect for colder months. It was the first shawl I’ve ever knitted and the first item I wanted to create a pattern for. The shawl is simple and beginner-friendly, yet effective and eye-catching.

The shawl design features three easy lace patterns combined with stockinette stitch and applied the garter border. It is a perfect knitting project for your favourite series during cosy evenings.

The pattern was featured in Yarnpeople Issue 1: Lace.

Final measurements
Width: 220cm / 86.5”
Height: 120cm / 47.25”

Yarn
Worsted weight yarn, approximately 1000 m / 1095 yds

Sample shown is knit in Cascade Alpaca Lana D’Oro (50% Wool, 50% Alpaca; 1 skein 200 m / 219 yds per 100 g / 3.5 oz.); colourway Starry Night (1063). 5 skeins x 100 g / 3.5 oz are used.

Needles
5.00 mm / US 8 circular needle with a cable length of at least 100 cm / 40”

Gauge
14 stitches & 24 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in Stockinette stitch pattern, after blocking

Gauge is not crucial to this project, nevertheless, it influences the total amount of yarn used and final measurements.

Notions
Crochet hook; scrap yarn; stitch markers; tapestry needle; blocking mats, t-pins and lace blocking wires (optional)

Techniques used
Crochet Provisional Cast On; Kitchener Stitch for Garter Pattern

Notes
The shawl begins at the centre and is worked outwards. To
form triangular shape four stitches are increased in every right-side row of the main body of the shawl. The stitch counts do not include border stitches. The stitch counts will be 20 sts less than the total amount of stitches on the needle.

The pattern was thoroughly tech-edited and test knitted. But if you have any question, need help, or think you may have found an error in the pattern, please drop me an email at nataliya@fibrecreative.nl
