The Mineral mittens are worked from the bottom up, beginning with a ribbed cuff that can be folded. They have a simple, overall stitch pattern in two colours, with knitted and purled stitches combined. Stitches for the thumb are put on hold, and new stitches are cast on to continue working the hand. This means there is an opening for the thumb and that the mitten can be tried on to make sure the fit is just right. After the hand is finished, the thumb stitches are put back on the needles, and stitches for the back of the thumb are picked up from the CO edge on the hand. The whole mitten as well as the thumb are charted only.
