Margaree Harbour Shawl
Also available as a knitCompanion design from Create2Thrive.
The first pattern in the Celtic Shawl Series.
Margaree Harbour is nestled along the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia – one of the most beautiful trails in the world with absolutely spectacular ocean vistas. Along the trail’s length are many small historic fishing communities that still today depend on the sea for their livelihood and celebrate their Celtic culture. Imagine a fisher’s spouse in days gone by, standing on the rocks overlooking the ocean, wrapped in the warmth of a woollen shawl to keep out the cold winds as they watch for that first glimpse of the fishing boats returning to the safety of the harbour.
The Saxon Braid cable is one of the most beloved of cables ~ in this shawl its arms reach toward the stunning cable centrepiece.
Pattern Notes
The irregular rib upper edge creates a lovely crescent shape for this uniquely constructed shawl – knit from end-tip to end-tip. The centre bottom edge is flat – no pointy tips here! -- and the entire cable panel gently curves along the width of the shawl creating an elegant flow.
Below the cable panel you’ll find another of Annie Maloney’s delightful filler stitch patterns - “Better than Garter” - found in her The Knitter’s Guide to Stitch Design.
Method
Knit flat side to side.
Special Techniques Used
Cables, make 5 from 1, decrease 5 to 1, cable decreases
A picture tutorial for the M5 increase to start the closed loop cables for this shawl has been uploaded to the Impeccable Knits group pages here on Ravelry.
Yarn Note
Crescent shape of shawl benefits from being blocked, so be sure to choose a yarn that blocks well.
