Presented as a documentary, the 1934 film, Man of Aran includes a significant degree of artifice in the staging. The concept of Aran
sweaters is also somewhat artificial. Heavily cabled, off-white sweaters would have been impractical for fishermen of old—cables require more yarn and time in the making and off-white would get filthy very quickly. Just like the film, the “Aran sweater” as we know it was, effectively, invented to be sold to tourists—representative, but staged.

This sock uses classic Aran sweater patterning to create a sock equally impractical for fishing.

Pattern offers both top-down and toe-up instructions.

Pattern is written so that it can be worked on DPNs, magic loop or 2 circulars, as you prefer. Foot and leg length are adjustable to fit.
