I designed this stole for the RDS National Crafts Competition in 2016 and Lusna won the Guild of Irish Lacemakers Award! It is the lightest, airiest and most beautiful shawl I have every made and it was a definite test for my patience and skills.

The Heirloom Knitting Ethereal Cashsilk is strong yet incredibly fine and takes a little getting used to. So, take your time, enjoy the process and happy knitting x

What you will need:
o 1 skein x Heirloom Knitting Ethereal Cashsilk (1,860 yds per 25g). The stole uses 1,330 yards or 1,216 metres of ethereal yarn approx.
o 1.5mm circular needles
o Stitch markers for placing between repeats (optional)
o Tapestry needle
o Sharp scissors
o Smooth cotton yarn (waste yarn) for provisional cast on and a small gauge crochet hook

Gauge:
Not critical, you could use a gossamer or cobweb yarn and appropriate needle to knit a beautiful heirloom shawl, adjust the number of centre repeats to suit your taste

Finished Dimensions:
22” x 52” approx.

Notes:
The overall width and length of this stole is customisable. My version has 8 repeats of the centre pattern and the size was 22” x 52” using 1.5mm needles and the ethereal Cashsilk. You can add as many repeats of the centre as you desire. Adjust your yarn yardage as necessary.

Centre - 23 left hand stitches + (20 stitches repeat) + 24 right hand stitches
Borders - 23 left hand stitches + (40 stitches repeat) + 24 right hand stitches

Just add twice as many centre repeats in ratio with the border repeats if you are making the stole wider.
The stole is knit in garter stitch (knit every row).

As the ethereal yarn is quite delicate, I chose to start with the centre from a provisional cast on. This means that there will be no graft of centre to border at the end, as you will be picking up the stitches from the provisional cast on and knitting the second border, before adding the edging around all four sides of the stole.

When blocking this stole, be very careful as the finished shawl is very delicate and stretches quite a bit when wet. Don’t block it aggressively, but with a gentle even tension.
