Valentia Shawl
There is something timeless and beautiful about the simplicity of Shetland Lace, it never ceases to amaze me how decreases and
yarn overs can culminate in such a beautiful knitted item. I spent a wonderful week on the island of Valentia, off the Kerry coast, a few years ago and the whole time I was there I was plotting and planning this shawl in my head. When knit up, it definitely exceeded my expectations and I am delighted to offer it to you as a knitting pattern. Happy knitting x
What you will need:
• 12 skeins x Jamieson and Smith Shetland Supreme 2ply Lace (219 yds per 25g). The shawl uses 2,625 yards or 2,400
metres of lace yarn approx.
• 3.25mm circular needles
• 4 Stitch markers for placing between sections, one a different colour (special marker)
• Tapestry needle
• Sharp scissors
Gauge:
Not critical
Finished Dimensions:
68” x 68” approx.
Notes:
This pattern is knit seamlessly, so you will begin with the centre square which is knit back and forth in GARTER STITCH. You will
use a provisional cast on either by using a crochet cast on or knitting several rows with a contrasting colour smooth yarn. Without
casting off, you will pick up and knit stitches along the sides and bottom of the square and join for knitting in the round.
The borders are then knit outwards; every other row will need to be PURLED to keep the garter stitch appearance.
Finally, the edging is knit onto the live border stitches (in GARTER STITCH) and then the two ends are grafted together to
complete the shawl.
