Pattern Description from Knitted Lace of Estonia: “ The center pattern for this lovely shawl is an old and very popular motif. It reminds me of the lilacs that bloom throughout Estonia in June, as well as the special lilac wood knitting needles used by the knitters of Haapsalu. This shawl begins with a lace edge I found in the book Haapsalu Ratik, which is followed by a diamond border pattern. The center is filled with lilac leaves and the top edge mirrors the bottom. This top edge is knitted separately and grafted onto the main piece so the direction of the knitting is the same at both ends. Garter stitches are used to visually separate the pattern motifs and provide edgings for the long sides of the shawl.”

Finished Size: About 20” (51 cm) wide and 66” (167.5 cm) long, relaxed after blocking.

Yarn: Laceweight (#0 Lace).
Wooly West Horizons Lace Yarn (100% wool; 525 yd480 m/50 g): natural white, 1 skein.

Needles: Size U.S. 5 (3.75 mm): straight. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); stitch holder; tapestry needle.

Additional Gauge: 12-stitch pattern repeat from from Lilac Leaf Center and Border chart measures about 2.5” (6.5 cm) wide, relaxed after blocking.
