INSPIRATION & DESCRIPTION
Lavenders for Veronica, inspired as a gift for a special person in my life, is an elegant stole with a stunning lace panel and a collar.
Worked from side to side, symmetrical garter stitch wings with a bud-detailed border flank a gorgeous bouquet-like center panel, featuring a Japanese lace stitch pattern resembling petals, leaves, and pistils, perfect for showcasing a special skein of yarn. A beautiful irregular rib collar adds extra comfort and ease of wear. Each section is customizable in length to maximize available yarn.
For those looking to make a memorable gift for oneself or a loved one, or those wishing to indulge in the joy of slightly advanced lace techniques, it is an ideal project.
Size is adjustable based on your preference and available amount of yarn at hand.
More story behind the inspiration
CONSTRUCTION
Shawl is worked from tip to tip in three sections, starting with the left wing garter stitch section from a small number of cast-on stitches with increases and a border with bud-like details along the right edge, then continuing straight at full shawl body width to the middle section. The middle section, a lace panel, is followed by a symmetrical right wing garter stitch section with decreases.
For finishing, stitches are picked up and knitted along the wing tips to bookend the shawl body. Finally, stitches are picked up along the plain selvedge edge and worked into a knitted-on border to form the shawl collar.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length (measured along collar): 48” (120 cm) total; Left & Right Wings: 13.5” (34 cm) each, including 1” (2.5 cm) wing tip trim; Lace Panel: 20” (50 cm)
Depth: 12.75” (32 cm), including 2.75” (6.9 cm) for collar
YARN

1 skein of Julie Asselin, Anatolia (60% brushed mohair, 40% silk; 320 yds (293 m) per 25 g) in Après la pluie
CC (Wings):

or

CC: ~180 yds (165 m) of sport to DK weight yarn
Any sport to DK weight yarn (or multiple strands of lighter-weight yarns adding up to sport to DK weight) can be used for both MC & CC.
NEEDLE & NOTIONS
3.75 mm (US Size 5) circular needle with 32” (80 cm) cord or longer
2 stitch markers, plus optional markers for stitch repeats
Blocking pins
Tapestry needle
SUGGESTED GAUGE
21 sts x 32 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in garter stitch, wet blocked
Gauge is a suggestion based on the sample yarns, and is not critical. Feel free to go up in needle size to make a fabric that feels good with your yarns, and large enough to show off the lace stitches. Difference in gauge may result in difference in yarn consumption and finished measurements.
NOTES
Each section can be customized in length by working additional repeats, as indicated within the pattern. Note that if you wish to maintain the symmetry between the left and right wings, the same number of extra repeats should be worked for both sections.
For planning purposes, ensure enough CC yarn is reserved for the second wing (an amount equal to or greater than was used in the first wing) by weighing the yarn at the beginning of the project, and noting the yarn consumption after finishing the first wing.
If no modification is made, the trims (wing tips & collar) are likely to consume about a half of the MC yarn used in the lace panel.
