Hygge Hat & Mitts
Meet Hygge, a set of fingerless mitts and matching hat to remind you of the best things about the winter season.
Hygge, pronounced (hoo-ga), is a Danish word that evokes a sense of coziness, comfort, friendship, and the enjoyment of simple moments. It’s a celebration of the little traditions that see us through the dark winter months, like lighting candles or gathering around the fire with a hot drink and good friends.
For me, hygge is knitting. Curling up with yarn and needles by the fire is the epitome of coziness and comfort in the middle of winter. I designed this hat and mitt set as a total comfort knit, both in the making and the wearing. A simple cable pattern that’s easy to memorize creates a warm fabric to keep your hands and head warm all winter long.
Mitt Details:
Suggested yarn: 1 skein (145 yds/50 grams) of Brooklyn Tweed Arbor
Needles: size US 6 and US 7 circular needles (for magic loop method) or dpns
Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle
Gauge: cable pattern (rows 1-8) after blocking: 12 sts and 15 rows = 2 in.
Finished size (after blocking): 6” long and 7” circumference at wrist
Hat Details:
Suggested yarn: 2 skeins (290 yds/100 grams) of Brooklyn Tweed Arbor
Needles: size US 4 and US 6 circular needles or dpns
Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle
Gauge: cable pattern after blocking: 13 sts and 15 rows = 2 in.
Finished size after blocking: 8” tall (without pom pom) and 19” circumference
Notes:
The mitts are identical. You’ll work the same set of directions twice, once for your left mitt and once for the right mitt. To create the thumb gusset, you’ll be working increases at the beginning and end of each round within a set of markers.
The hat is a fitted hat with just a touch of slouch towards the crown. Add or subtract length from the body of the hat to customize your hat’s slouch factor. The yardage for the hat includes an optional pom pom. For the sample, I used 1 full skein for the hat, but if you plan to knit a swatch and add a pom pom be sure to buy an extra skein.
