This illusion portrait of Freddie Mercury is a small section of Is this just fantasy? Make this small piece as a cushion, or wall-hanging, if the larger piece is too big for you.

The finished square is approximately 40 cm (16”) square and takes about 140 metres (150 yards) in each of two colours. I used Stylecraft Special DK in Black and Silver. For this particular illusion it is important to have a very strong contrast in the colours. I used 3.25 mm needles.

When you look directly at illusion knitting you only see narrow stripes. The image is revealed when you look from the side. All illusion knits are difficult to photograph. This one is even more difficult as the faces are very ghostly in the original image.
