I needed a quick pattern to teach a group of 7-12th graders to knit and the concept of this hat came to mind.
I searched everywhere I could think of to find stitch counts and needle sizes, thinking there surely must be many variations of this pattern, but found none.
So, I did the math and swatching myself, and ended up with this hat!

It’s so simple! You just cast on, knit in garter stitch, cast off, and sew it up. This hat is perfect for a first project as well. A video tutorial is included in the pattern for casting on, working a knit stitch, and binding off.

The fit and circumstances were fortuitous, hence the hat name!
I’ve added additional sizing for you, so you can quickly knit up a snuggly hat for everyone in your life, or maybe do some weekend craft fair prep!

Sizing
Hat Circumference Unblocked: 9.5 (10.25, 11, 11.75, 12.5, 13.5, 14, 15)“ / 24 (25.5, 28, 30, 31.5, 33.5, 35, 38) cm

Stretches to fit head circumference: 14.75 (16, 17, 18.5, 195, 20.75, 22, 23.75)“ / 37 (40, 43, 46, 49, 51.5, 55, 59) cm

Sizing note: Garter stitch is VERY stretchy. The sample is 15” (38 cm) un-stretched, and fits comfortably on my 23.5” (59 cm) head. That means you will get at least 150% stretch in this pattern.

Hat height with brim unfolded: 6.5 (7.25, 8, 8.75, 9.5, 10.5, 11.25, 12)“ / 16 (18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30) cm.

Hat height and circumference are chosen separately for ultimate customization! The height of the hat is determined by how many stitches you cast on; the circumference is determined by how many rows you knit.

All brimmed sizes are written for a 3.5” (9 cm) brim that flips up. This will allow for longer wear in the smaller sizes as well, as the brim will gradually shorten as the child grows.

This pattern has been test knit for fit checking, pattern accuracy, and yardage requirements.
